The Oxford Handbook of Mary

The Oxford Handbook of Mary was published in August 2019 in the UK (not until October in the US). It looks splendid; I hope that readers enjoy the contents! The cover includes a photograph of the 12th century French statue of the Virgin in Majesty, Notre-Dame des Chazes. The photographer, Francis Debaisieux of Clermont-Ferrand, kindly gave his permission for Oxford University Press to use it. His books of photographs, especially of the Auvergne and Marian statues, are stunning and well worth the cost. The Handbook has an introduction and 42 chapters, so it covers a great range of Marian subjects and history. I don’t particularly like the description ‘handbook’: it makes me think of DIY or cooking! However, I suppose what it does convey is that the book would be a valuable resource for anyone doing research on Mary; amongst all those chapters, there will be material proving helpful for any Marian topic. The Oxford Handbooks cover all kinds of subjects and it is good to be part of the series.
